In the summer of 2021, the entire school year participated in a hands-on programming activity using p5.js. Fourteen second-year students who had developed an interest in programming formed a team and took on the challenge of creating further works. They created a Web version of a map using programming based on the “Usa Jingu Omotenashi Map” created in English by the school’s inbound navigators, hoping to contribute to local revitalization by introducing Usa Jingu Shrine, which is located right in front of the school. Since we were not able to add movement to the map when the entire grade school experienced it, this time we added movement to the map to make it more enjoyable for the viewers. In the process, students from universities in Japan and a Japanese language school in Cambodia helped us as mentors, giving us advice online on areas that would have been difficult for us to handle on our own. The opportunity to interact with people we would not normally have the chance to interact with not only helped us improve our programming skills, but also allowed us to enjoy communicating with each other, which was a very valuable experience for us. Due to the Corona disaster, we were not able to make a presentation directly to the local community, but we were able to make a video presentation of the maps we created at the “Future Earth School” show, which many people were able to see. Through the entire activity, the students were able to experience the fun of programming and the enjoyment of coming up with ideas in cooperation with their peers, and we feel that it was a good experience for each one of them.
